Sentinel is committed to protecting the environment

Environmental Principles

The world’s natural resources are finite and fragile, which is why Sentinel places a high priority on minimizing the environmental impact of our organization. We maintain a substantial commitment to policies, programs, and practices designed to conduct all aspects of our operations in an environmentally and economically responsible manner.

Sentinel has established and maintains the following corporate environmental policy:

Environmental Policy Statement

Environmental protection is a management responsibility as well as the responsibility of every employee of Sentinel. This policy concerning environmental protection addresses aspects of Sentinel’s operations which can potentially impact the environment.

Sentinel shall seek to:

  • Conduct its operations in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards concerning environmental protection and provide a mechanism for self-monitoring to ensure compliance and continual improvement.
  • Establish corporate environmental objectives and targets where applicable, relevant to the environmental impacts of its activities and measure progress against these objectives. These objectives and targets shall be reviewed and revised as necessary on an annual basis.
  • Continually improve environmental management policies, programs, and performance, based on the results of our periodic reviews and taking into account regulatory developments, customer needs, technical developments, scientific understanding, and community expectations.
  • Minimize the environmental risks to our employees and the communities in which we operate.
  • Promote employee awareness of environmental concerns, actions, and responsibilities.
  • Operate facilities and conduct activities taking into consideration the efficient use of energy and materials.
  • Reduce and (where possible) eliminate waste through recycling, as well as handle and dispose of all waste through safe and responsible methods.
  • Ensure the Executive Management team is fully informed about pertinent environmental issues and Sentinel environmental policy.

Sustainability Goals

As part of our commitment to long-term sustainability, Sentinel routinely creates and reassesses environmental goals to maximize their impact and minimize our own carbon footprint. Our current sustainability goals include:

Reduction of natural resources and energy waste by 15%

Goal Date: April 30, 2025

Measurement: Sentinel headquarters monitors its annual energy usage with totals listed on our ComEd electric bill. Prior to making sustainability improvements, our energy usage was 702,012 KWh/yr. Following the sustainability improvements, we have decreased energy usage to 617,867 KWh/yr. This is a reduction of energy consumption by 12%, with even further improvements expected.

  • Sentinel headquarters replaced all overhead fluorescent lighting with LED lighting. LED lights are 80% more efficient than fluorescent lights, using far less power to deliver a strong, long-lasting output at a lower wattage. With the removal of 678 fluorescent bulbs, it is estimated Sentinel has already reduced its CO2 emissions by 41 metric tons.
  • As more employees have chosen to work remotely, Sentinel reduced the size of its Denver area office. The previous office space was 6,285 square feet in size. The new Denver area office is 2,705 square feet in size. It is 43% smaller, and requires significantly less resources as a result. This includes a reduction in energy consumption (lighting, heating, cooling, equipment), waste production (paper, plastic, electronics), and travel emissions with fewer employees at the office.

Reduction of CO2 emissions from UPS equipment by 52%

Goal Date: April 30, 2027

Measurement: Sentinel is committed to reducing the overall CO2 emissions from our UPS (uninterruptible power supply) equipment of 3011(kg) by 52% over the next 3 years. Highlighting how technology improves resiliency, security, and sustainability for customers, we commit to taking the first step in replacing the UPS in our Business Solutions Center demo facility in 2024 in order to:

  • Save $500+ in energy costs over the first year
  • Eliminate 1555(kg) of CO2 emissions over the first year
